OBAR 2010 Board of Directors

New Directors will take office on January 1st, 2010.

  2010 PRESIDENT

Genelle Carter
Sun Realty, Corolla

I am honored to be a REALTOR® and want to be a part of continual growth within our organization. With past BOD service as your Legislative Chair, Bylaws Chair, Membership Chair, Director, Secretary, and this year as President Elect, I have a lot of experience to bring to the position of President.

What are your top 2-3 goals for your Leadership year?
1.  To always be willing to listen to member comments and make appropriate changes to better serve REALTOR® members and the public.
2.  Continue to offer educational programs and implement systems that promote personal and professional growth through OBAR.
3.  Most importantly to always remember why we are here and who we serve. To make the best decisions for the membership as a whole.

  2010 PRESIDENT ELECT

Kim Endre
Coldwell Banker Seaside Realty, Nags Head

I am honored to call myself a REALTOR® and want to share that excitement with all the current and new members of OBAR. Ever since I began my career as a REALTOR® I wanted to be able to give back to the REALTOR® community in ways that I felt could only be achieved by being on the Board of Directors. I am a volunteer and a leader that desires to stay on top of the issues at hand for our fellow REALTORS® in this scary time. I have served on the BOD for several years and feel I have the continuity that is needed to make informed decisions on behalf of our members. I thank you for this opportunity to represent you in the upcoming years.

What are your top 2-3 goals for your Leadership year?
I would love to be able to engage more members to participate...it is only in this way that we can improve and evolve our current Association. I would also love to be able to help find more Non-Dues Revenue for our association so that we can continue to keep our dues low and not have to raise dues in the near future. In addition I want to be there to clarify the processes that continue to confuse our members and to be able to guide our new members in the areas they need.

TREASURER

Leslie Painter
Colony Realty Corporation, Avon

As a former educator, I feel the best way to improve the productivity of brokers, the public image of brokers, and the effectiveness of brokers is through education. A well educated broker is an expert in his/her field and will perform his/her job responsibilities with professionalism. Responsible management of finances also requires related education.  Although I have enjoyed my years on the education committee and also as a Director at Large, I feel that I will also serve effectively as your 2010 Treasurer.

What are your top 2-3 goals for your Leadership year?
As a member of the Board of Directors, I promise to work to promote education among REALTORS® and to promote strong member participation. I will take the time to personally invite members to participate in general membership meetings and to encourage their participation on committees. Through increased participation, we will then be able to encourage more OBAR members to earn professional designations and certifications. I also pledge to work with the other members of the board to make our association the best in North Carolina!

Again, thank you for the opportunity to serve our association.

  SECRETARY

Ali Breaux
Sun Realty, Kill Devil Hills

My experience as Member Services and Education Chair as well as my tenure as an OBAR Director has taught me a lot about the value that the REALTOR® organization provides, especially on a local level. I have the benefit of this experience but also new insights and ideas and a willingness to serve. My father was very active in REALTORS® when I was growing up and has always encouraged participation. I welcome the opportunity to be a part of the leadership of our local organization.

What are your top 2-3 goals for your Leadership year?
1.  To ensure that OBAR responds to and serve the changing needs and wants of our membership, planning for both conservative spending while ensuring we're still meeting the needs of our members. In challenging times it is important to balance our current economic situation with the need to poise ourselves for when the local and national economy rebounds so we can be sure we're ahead of the curve when the sales market rebounds.
2.  Encourage and increase participation in the organization, both by experienced REALTORS® and new members.
3.  Always consider the ultimate responsibility as a Board Member, which is to serve the best interest of the organization and our members in all decisions.

  PAST PRESIDENT

Monica Thibodeau
Carolina Designs Realty, Duck

I have been a REALTOR® member on the Outer Banks since 1989. I have greatly benefited from this association and always felt it was important to give back and serve. As Past President in 2010, I am committed to giving back the wisdom and knowledge gained in leadership to benefit incoming new volunteers, and as always, doing my best for you.

What are your top 2-3 goals for your Leadership year?
My goal continues to be to enhance services to members in this challenging environment. We need to be able to communicate efficiently with our members, providing education and timely information that will improve our REALTORS® ability to be effective. I welcome input from all members and encourage their participation.

  2010-2011 DIRECTOR AT LARGE

Cindy Edwards
Century 21, Nachman, Kitty Hawk

I have chosen to serve on the Board of Directors for 2010 in order to hopefully bring some of my experiences and knowledge to our Association so that we continue to represent the Members of our Association in a proud and professional manner, in order to continue the positive benefits and organization that we currently enjoy as Members. I realize that it is necessary for people to step up and serve the Membership. I hope that I can bring some things to the Board of Directors that will continue their excellent efforts and even new ideas.

What are your top 2-3 goals for your Leadership year?
My top goals for 2010 Leadership is to continue to promote the best interests of our Members, and to work with the Board of Directors in being open to adapt to changes that our market is currently experiencing. Times have changed for us all and it will require more work and consideration by the Board duing these times, while still maintaining the solid foundation that has been built at OBAR. I look forward to the challenges and will also make it a goal to keep a positive attitude within the Board throughout our transition over the next year.

  2010-2011 DIRECTOR AT LARGE

Leslie Gilmore
Great Escapes Realty,Kitty Hawk

As a new Director, my goal this year is to learn more about how OBAR can serve the general membership, and in doing so learn how I may be able to help make a positive contribution to the future of our association.

What are your top 2-3 goals for your Leadership year?
My primary goal is to keep General Membership aware of the changing legislation which is affecting our profession every day. Also, in this first year of service to our association I want to learn as much as possible from seasoned Board members so I can effectively help our members.

  2010-2011 DIRECTOR AT LARGE

John Head
Century 21, The Head Agency, Frisco

It is apparent in this day that we are starved for time, our most valuable commodity, and I am no different.  But, I found a way to volunteer in 2008 as part of our Association's MLS Committee and it has become apparent to me that if you make the time, it is very rewarding. So, when the opportunity arose to serve as a Director at Large, it was an easy decision.

What are your top 2-3 goals for your Leadership year?
As a Salesmen and Business owner, I want to see our Association be the best at providing the tools necessary to engage in the Business of Real Estate and to have vendors that are more responsive to our requests.  The MLS system is the most intricate part and my goal is to see that we have the most advanced system that technology can offer without the redundancy of having multiple systems to accomplish a task.

The other aspect of my desire to serve is to bring quality sales training to our members, offered through our Association. As we have learned in the past two years, we are all working harder (in most cases for less) and sharpening our sales skills from business planning, prospecting, to the listing presentation, these will be keys to surviving and prospering in the years to come.

2009-2010 DIRECTOR AT LARGE

Michael Harrington
Resort Realty, Nags Head

I chose to serve on the Board of Directors in order to help bridge a gap and promote more involvement with the up and coming generations of the local REALTOR® community. The Outer Banks has some of the most talented and experienced Real Estate professionals that could serve as outstanding role models to the next generation. Since my involvement started with OBAR about five years ago, I have had nothing but gracious and positive support and want to continue that mentorship attitude into the future.

What are your top 2-3 goals for your Leadership year?
1.  To help our MLS continue offering a national online syndication program available to all members.
2.  To promote our involvement within the Association from the next generation.
3.  To strengthen our Property Management Committee's educational opportunities due to the large contingency of Vacation Rental Managers on the Outer Banks.

2009-2010 DIRECTOR AT LARGE

Bill Holt
RE/MAX Ocean Realty

In my 34 year tenure as a REALTOR®, I have dedicated many of my energies to improve our industry through Association work and Leadership by example. Our industry needs quality leaders dedicated to raising the bar of quality to the benefit of the membership and the clients we serve. Mine is a selfless commitment to improve information and communication amongst our membership. Through improved educational offerings and Legislative initiatives and other member services, the Leaders in your Association need to be dedicated to improving our membership's service to the community.

What are your top 2-3 goals for your Leadership year?
Albert Einstein once said "In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity". Times are difficult and the country as a whole is in serious need of an effective adjustment in direction. As an Association, we need to improve our image in the community and provide the necessary assistance our market needs while going through this adjustment.

The Association needs to address the technological educational needs and offerings to enhance our members' ability to communicate with their clients and social medium. I share the goal with others to provide the most accurate information insuring the Public's interests and REALTOR® information needs are the best available. MLS is one of the main focuses of Member Services from OBAR. In the difficult times we continue to face, this area can facilitate one main goal...providing the most accurate information with an ease of use allowing our membership the opportunity to focus on their own business!

  2010 DIRECTOR AT LARGE

Kelly Wilson
Outer Beaches Realty, Avon

Since becoming a REALTOR® I have served on the Property Management Committee and on the Budget and Finance Committee, as Treasurer in 2009. I am honored to continue to serve this year as a Director.  I have worked in property management for 17 years and enjoy working in the vacation rental industry on Hatteras Island. My education and professional career have centered on Accounting and I look forward to bringing my experience to the organization.

What are your top 2-3 goals for your Leadership year?
My goals include serving the membership by working with the new 2010 Treasurer and the Budget and Finance Committee to understand the financial position of the organization, and to ensure integrity and accuracy of financial reports. In addition, I will work with OBAR Officers and Board of Directors to make decisions that will best serve membership.

  2010-2011 TOURISM BOARD DIRECTOR

Jackie Myers
Village Realty, Nags Head

I am pleased to have been nominated to serve a second term as OBAR's representative on the Tourism Board. My first year was one of "eyeopening change". Our board members have settled down, hired a promising new director and become more engaged with the business of promoting the Outer Banks. I am currently a member of the marketing committee, beach access committee, chair of the grants committee and have served on the personnel committee.

My 25+ years in property management are an obvious advantage to OBAR as their representative on this board. Vacation rentals are the largest source of occupancy tax revenue for the operation of the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau. Our property management companies must have a voice. Sales and rentals historically thrive "hand in hand"; the more visitors, the more potential buyers and sellers to support the livelihood of our membership.

What are your top 2-3 goals for your Leadership year?
I want to improve communication between the Outer Banks Visitor's Bureau and OBAR's property management membership to openly address concerns of both organizations.

We must maintain the financial stability of our organization and provide the best level of service possible to our membership while being sensitive to the tough economic times for many members.

Improve education and communication between our sales and property management divisions. We all have challenges and a better understanding of each other's roles is beneficial for us and our clients. It is also important to promote continued awareness of political issues that affect our livelihoods.

  2010-2011 TOURISM BOARD DIRECTOR (Alternate)

Rosemarie Doshier
Four Seasons Realty, Duck

It is requirement of the Dare County Commissioners that we place two names in nomination for our seat on the Dare County Tourism Board. This is a 2 year term and Jackie Myers is at the end of her first two years. She can run for re-election for an additional term. As you know the tourisim board has had some challenges during the past year, along with hiring a new director. We are not sure if the commissioners will be looking for someone with past experience or a new candidate, so I have agreed to run along with Jackie to give them a choice. I feel we are both qualified and can represent our association well. Jackie and I have talked and agreed that we will support the decision made and are happy that the REALTORS® have a seat on this very important board.

What are your top 2-3 goals for your Leadership year?
My goals for leadership if I am on the board next year would be continue to keep the members informed and work diligently to get more members involved. There is a reason we give our time to our association and it is just that "It is Our Association" as a REALTOR who has been involved for over 20 years, take it from me, if you will become involved you will see the rewards.

PROPERTY MANAGEMENT CHAIR

Chieftain Conant
Sun Realty, Kill Devil Hills

As a licensed member of management with Sun Realty, I was given the chance to join the Outer Banks Association of REALTORS®. I attended meetings and listened to what happened around me, two years ago I decided that I wanted to take part in the improvement of my business and joined the Property Management Committee. The committee gave me the chance to talk to other Property Managers in the area, in turn learning more about our business. In 2008 I served on the committeee, in 2009 the current Chair of the Committee, Leslie Daughtry, asked me to be her Vice Chair and in 2010 I hope to chair the committee. Once I got involved as the Vice Chair, it opened my eyes to just how much the REALTOR® association does in helping to further our business. Seeing the behind the scenes and drive of the people to better our community, business and association, has pushed me to be a part of this change.

What are your top 2-3 goals for your Leadership year?
1. To continue to keep fellow property managers educated and abreast of changes and trends in the industry.
2.  To educate and encourage implementation of sustainable practices and "green" initiatives within the property management industry; including clients, guests and homeowners.
3.  Increase my involvement within the Property Manager circuit on the Outer Banks.
