Scammers are getting more sophisticated. Several members contacted OBAR to share stories about being contacted by callers impersonating Dare and Currituck County sheriff's office employees, making a convincing argument that they did not show up for court, did not pay a fine, did not serve jury duty, etc. and needed to pay a certain amount of money before they would be arrested. Those receiving these calls reported being very upset and confused as the callers were very aggressive and the caller id showed the call coming from the respective Sheriff's departments. Please be aware that you will never be contacted by phone to meet anyone to hand over money, gift cards or the like. Phone numbers have been ghosted and it is important they you are diligent in not engaging with the caller and report the call to the sheriff's office.
