Latest from Dare County on Hurricane Maria Storm Surge Warning Issued for Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village

As Hurricane Maria moves closer to Dare County, winds will reach tropical force later today and remain through early Thursday. Extended periods of high winds will lead to ocean overwash and soundside flooding.
The National Hurricane Center has issued a Storm Surge Warning for the southernmost villages of Hatteras Island, including Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village. Water level rise of up to 4 feet above ground is forecast for these areas.

Mandatory evacuation remains in effect for visitors on Hatteras Island. As local conditions deteriorate, road closures and travel restrictions are likely, particularly for portions of Highway 12 on Hatteras Island. Motorists should proceed with caution, drive slowly through standing water, and stay off Highway 12 during periods of high tide. All areas of Dare County are experiencing dangerous surf and rip currents that will remain through the week. Stay out of the water- conditions are unsafe for even the most experienced swimmers.
Dare County Offices
Dare County offices on Hatteras Island are closed today and will be closed on Wednesday, September 27. All county offices north of Oregon Inlet are open for business.
Dare County Public Works
There will be NO commercial trash collection on Hatteras Island on Wednesday, September 27. There will be NO commercial recycle pick up for the remainder of this week.
Dare County Parks and Recreation
All Dare County Parks and Recreation activities are cancelled through Wednesday, September 27.

NOAA Tools Training – Workshop on Sea Level Rise

Date: Tuesday, October 17
Time: 9:30am – 4:15pm
Location: NOAA Beaufort Lab Auditorium, 101 Pivers Island Road, Beaufort NC
Cost: Free!

Workshop Purpose: Participants will learn about the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) resources available to improve local decision-making. Participants will get hands-on experience with various tools, including the Sea Level Rise Viewer and the Coastal Flood Exposure Mapper, as well as learn about resources available through NOAA’s Digital Coast.
Please bring a laptop or tablet to the training for the hands-on exercises with the various tools.

Travel Support: Travel funds are available on a first-come first serve basis for non-Federal participants. Meals, hotel, and mileage can be reimbursed at N.C. state per diem rates. Continuing Education:
American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) will receive 5.5 certification maintenance credits. N.C. Certified Floodplain Managers will receive 5.5 continuing education credits. This workshop is co-hosted by the N.C. Sentinel Site Cooperative.

The early voting process allows registered voters to appear in person at one of the designated locations to vote prior to Election Day. In Manteo Mon – Fri 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday, November 4th from 8:30 a.m. to noon; KDH early voting hours, Mon – Fri 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Election Day: Tuesday, November 7th, Dare County residents may vote for Town government positions in all 6 Towns.

Live/Own Property in Kill Devil Hills – Participate in the Land Use Plan Survey!

The Town of Kill Devil Hills is updating its Land Use Plan. This important document provides policy guidance for future growth and development. All property owners and residents are encouraged to provide the Town with their input and opinions by completing the survey. This information will be extremely valuable to the Board of Commissioners as it gauges attitudes on growth and development.

The survey will close on Friday, September 29, 2017.

Town/County Updates

Currituck County – Reminder: The Planning and Community Development Department will hold one more training class to teach citizens how to use the online permit system. The final “Citizen Self Service” class will be held on Tuesday, October 24th, 10 a.m. at the Corolla Library.
Attendees will learn how to register an account; apply for online permits; upload documents; search existing permits; view inspection results and plan review results; pay for permits, utility bills, and taxes.

Duck – On Wednesday, October 4th at 7 p.m., the Town Council will conduct public hearings and consider the following Zoning Text Amendment applications:
• A proposal to amend the Town’s Zoning Ordinance by (1) adding Subsection 156.124(C)(1)(e)4 setting standards and permitting the installation of a single post-and-rail structure down the eastern side of the primary dune in the beach nourishment project area; and (2) adding Subsection 156.124(C)(1)(e)5 setting standards and permitting the installation of post-and-rope structures over the top and down the eastern side of the primary dune in the beach nourishment project area.
• Ord. 17-11 A proposal to amend the definition of “Lot Coverage” in Section 156.002 of the Town’s Zoning Ordinance by establishing that public sidewalks and similar public improvements located on privately owned properties shall not be included in the calculation of lot coverage.

Southern Shores – Town Council will hold a Public Hearing on Tuesday, October 3rd at 5:30 p.m. in the Pitts Center. The purpose of the Public Hearing is to consider ZTA-17-05, a Zoning Text Amendment application submitted by the Town of Sothern Shores to amend the Southern Shores Town Code by amending Section 16-5, Section 36-57, Section 36-202, Section 36-203, Section 36-205, Section 36-208, and Section 36-102 to allow living space within accessory structures. The application and related materials are available for public inspection here or during regular office hours at Town Hall. Kitty Hawk – The Beach Nourishment public meeting is now scheduled to be held on Wednesday, October 4th at 1 pm to answer questions about the Beach Nourishment project. The meeting will be held at Kitty Hawk Town Hall.

Nags Head – The Town of Nags Head has developed a page on their websitededicated to stormwater management in the town.
